[CALIBK12] Children's book stumper

I really count on hearing about and discussing the big ideas here, but I
like to help people find their long lost beloved books as well, and I am
frustrated when stumped.

The question below was asked on another listserv and I couldn't find the
title and realize that our collective knowledge is much greater, so...

"I have a patron who is looking for a book that she read to her son when he
was a child (about 30 years ago).
The book's main characters are monsters or furry creatures. He remembers
them being purple. When the monsters get to a certain age they get
motorcycles for their birthdays. But this one monster is too small and he
won't be big enough for a normal motorcycle so they make him a smaller
motorcycle for his birthday so he won't be disappointed.

Can anyone help me out with this title and author?"

It sounds like a nice book.
