This may not be what you expect, but if your young man is a reader and enjoys historical fiction, try almost any title by G. A. Henty. They were all written in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. They are not like modern fiction because there is a great deal of description. They involve many different settings throughout British history. The author always finds a way to involve young people in the scenarios. I learned more history reading Henty than I did in any class in my high school. My dad got me started reading them when I was quite young. they seem to be a good fit for students from 6th grade through adult. Also look at some of the work by the Australian author Marsden. He wrote the Tomorrow series.
