[CALIBK12] TARGET: College and Career websites

We've been pretty happy with the new "California Career Zone " at http://www.cacareerzone.org/

It provides an interest profiler and other assessments, information on careers in a wide variety of areas, and a "reality check" that asks students to make choices about where they want to live, what kind of housing they want, which utilities, what kind of car, how many children they'd like to have, etc. At the end of this survey, they're presented with an annual income they'll need in order to sustain their lifestyle. Last week a girl in one class took the survey and discovered that if she got a "really good job that paid, like, $8 an hour," she would only fall short of her goal by $115,000 a year!

Don't miss the Occupational Outlook Handbook online, too, at http://www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm

For colleges, California Colleges is a pretty good starting place at http://www.californiacolleges.edu/, and I also recommend CSU Mentor, http://www.csumentor.edu/.

For other college and career links, you might check out http://www.sbhsd.k12.ca.us/sbhslib/collcareer/collegehelp.htm

Subject: [CALIBK12] TARGET: College and Career websites

I have two AVID classes coming in next week. The 8th graders are
researching colleges, and the 7th graders careers. Does anyone have
great websites for either general college information or great websites
for careers? (I'm looking for quality, not quantity.)
TIA,
