Good morning all!

I have a request from our vice-principal regarding a male first grade student that is an advanced reader. This boy can read 3rd and 4th grade level books, and he particularly enjoys non-fiction books. During his recess time in the morning and afternoon, he comes in to the library to read for fun, particularly picture books.

The origin of this request came from his mother, who believes he is not challenged enough at school when it comes to reading. Her son takes Armenian language and cultural classes, as well as French classes outside of school, and she makes him read the Armenian newspaper and write a summary everyday. To say that this child is under a lot a pressure at home is an understatement, but this is what we have to work with.

Although this young man can read at an advanced level, he does not necessarily comprehend all that is going on in the books, particularly in fiction. I need high level fiction and non-fiction titles that are challenging for him, but that he could comprehend at the same time. If you could forward appropriate book titles or booklists that would fit the bill, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks in advance,
Tania Guyer
School Librarian
