What a fantastic idea! How many teachers participate? 70 is a lot of participation! My participation is down this year, I tried something new and it didn't work out. I tried to stagger the time frames between 7th and 8th grade classes and by the time I was ready to do the 7th grade the teachers had moved on. There's still time but the writing test, the spelling bee etc. I will go back to the way I did it in the past.
Be sure to get some pictures and share them on the Library Technicians United Ning community!

Hello all,

I've been involved with promoting California Young Reader Medal program for many years now. This year I had 70 kids sign up among my six 5th & 6th grade classes, and they're almost finished reading the novels (their teachers read the hardest one out loud and then they can opt to read the other two). That's a big jump from last year's 24 kids!

Something new we're trying this year: I have read aloud all three intermediate picture books to each of the fourth grade classes. Now the students are preparing their "campaigns" for next week's election. The kids form a group and create a campaign poster and write a short speech. Next week, they'll share their speeches and posters, and then they'll vote for their favorites. The kids are doing this all on their own time (recess and lunch), with the materials given to them by the teachers, so I'm pretty excited about it. We'll see how they follow through. I just heard from our local (public) branch librarian that she's hoping to borrow the posters and copies of the speeches to create a display with. I think the kids will really be excited about seeing their work on display there!
