Web 2.0 Meets Information Fluency
http://tinyurl.com/298ggo
One-hour Web Conference with Joyce Valenza - $109.95
Two threads - information fluency and Web 2.0 - can be beautifully
woven into rich 21st century cloth as teachers and librarians who
value thinking skills, inquiry, ethical behavior, and innovative
student work hone their craft on a funky and vibrant 21st century
learning loom, with learners as collaborators. Together we will
examine new formats for student projects, projects that foster
information fluency and exploit the potential of the interactive and
media-rich "read/write Web."
Tuesday, Feb 26, 4:00 pm ET, 1:00 pm PT
Using Audio Books to Engage Struggling Readers
http://tinyurl.com/2xsa4v
One-hour Audio Conference with Hillary Wolfe - $85.00
As Learning Specialist at Northview High School, I won a grant from
Recorded Books and Califone, worth $5000 in books and audio equipment.
Excited, I set up an extensive listening center in the library,
expecting the teachers to jump on board. However, teachers questioned
the validity of audio books, especially in the secondary grades,
calling it cheating.
In this session, see how I overcame their resistance and built a
program that both reassured the teachers and benefited the students.
Our positive results have gone a long way to convince teachers that
audio books can make a big difference for struggling readers.
Wednesday, Feb 27, 3:00 pm ET, 12:00 pm PT
Designing Effective Questionnaires: What Every Librarian Needs to Know
http://tinyurl.com/2fzdxr
One-hour Audio Conference with Lisa M. Given - $85.00
This session will explore strategies for effective questionnaire
design, including issues related to layout, question selection, and
preparation for data analysis. Related topics, such as enhancing
response rates and practical tips for data management, will also be
discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to critique and
revise an existing questionnaire.
Thursday, Feb 28, 4:00 pm ET, 1:00 pm PT
Walking a Tightrope: Selection vs Censorship
http://tinyurl.com/2fwwfb
One-hour Audio Conference with Sya VanGeest and Beth McEwen - $85.00
Part of the formal education program to qualify as librarians and
teacher-librarians includes the study of the principles and methods
of building library collections, the writing of a good selection
policies, criteria for evaluating materials in a variety of formats
and for a range of purposes, and the relationship of the selection
process to user requirements. Training also includes the issue of
censorship, the art of the book review, and acquiring familiarity
with basic selection tools, current reviewing media, and acquisitions
procedures.
Formal training and strong selection policies form a good foundation,
but experience in the field, discussions shared with fellow
colleagues, and continuous learning are all necessary components to
remain balanced on the selection vs censorship tightrope!
This session, presented by two experienced and knowledgeable
practitioners, will use case studies and other strategies to
highlight the tricky issues encountered when selecting materials for
junior and young adult readers. Participants in the session will be
invited to send in questions and concerns in advance of the session,
and will also be given ample opportunity to interact with the
speakers. Adults working with these age groups need to share
perspectives, try to set personal biases aside, and develop reasoned
decision-making in this sensitive area where black and white do not
exist – only shades of grey!

Virtual Reference Competencies: Part One: Acquire and Improve
Technical Skills and Knowledge
http://tinyurl.com/2afkfd
Audio Conference Series with Diane Kovacs - $85.00
IM, e-mail, and chat reference are already here, but have you adapted
your traditional reference interview to these new formats? Learn how
to adapt traditional face-to-face reference interview skills to the
virtual interview—and how to interpret and use new cues (chat slang,
IM shorthand, emoticons, etc.). Find out how to select the best
information format for users and delivering content in a timely and
valuable manner. The three courses taken together will assist
reference librarians to move from the face-to-face to virtual
transaction with ease.
Virtual reference services can be as simple as answering e-mail or as
complex as juggling voice calls, instant messaging, e-mail, on-line
chat, and perhaps the use of some of the new social networking tools.
One of the first considerations a library might consider in venturing
into virtual reference might be an assessment of the technical skills
and knowledge of the staff. This session will provide an awareness
and overview of these new considerations.
