[CALIBK12] Author Unknown?

Hi Everyone,
 
I am hoping someone out there can help me out.  I am trying to find the original author of "The Gingerbread Man" or "The Gingerbread Boy".  From what I am finding, it is probably a very old folktale and probably author unknown.  I have a high school student who is looking for information for a literature project.  Any information is appreciated. Thank you in advance.
