[CALIBK12] National Geographics

I have bound volumes of National Geographic going back to 1912. When a discussion came up about a plague of locusts in Israel (or Palestine at the time) in 1913 or something, I was a hero when I produced the original National Geo article about it! I have a teacher of earth science who loves issues about volcanic eruptions and other such events in National Geographic magazines. They are indexed, so the articles are easy to find. Here's one voice for treasuring the old National Geographics--and keeping your subscription current.

I have had no magazine budget since 1988! But I do have National
Geographic given occasionaly to one or both of my MS libraries. I would
give them away to students if I were you.
I also know a young man who used to be a student who absolutely adores
them...in fact I bought some from a local charity thrift shop just for
him last week.
Maybe your students would not appreciate them, but the students at MLK
MS in Madera would. I give away as much literary stuff as I can manage
to them as often as I can.
Happy New Year!

I can't even
give ours away. People call to donate them from their basements all the
time. I
used to take them and go through them for the "good stuff".
Not anymore.
We dump all but the last 3 months.

Hi Sandy,
We use to archive National Geographic for years (they
were very seldom referenced). We disposed of them and now retain
only 3-6 months back issues. We give the old copies to the art,
science,
and social studies departments and students for student
projects when requested

How many previous years of periodicals to you keep

you keep more of National Geographic than other titles?
No one actually uses ours and we are running out of
storage space, but it seems un-librarianish to toss them!
