[CALIBK12] National Geographics

The National Geographic collection is my library is older than I am, as
we have all of the issues from 1952 to the present. They have their own
section in the stacks, and we keep extras in the back (which we've given
to students when they need to cut out pictures). We have an index for
every year or for collections of years, and we use them all the time to
find information for our students' research assignments. I pulled the
maps out of the magazines and cataloged them so that they can be checked
out by students or teachers. They are a wonderful resource!

"Librarians can catalog anything from an onion to a dog's ear. They
could catalog you. Librarians wield unfathomable power. With a flip of
the wrist they can hide your dissertation behind piles of old Field and
Stream magazines. They can find data for your term paper that you never
knew existed...Librarians rule." --Erica Olsen

Calibbers,

About the only thing I am learning from the contributions to this thread
is that there is very little real research going on in schools anymore.

Like Diane, I had a decades-old collection, which was used on a regular
basis, because it was built into the research process by teachers who
loved their subject and wanted students to discover their joy. Between
RGPL and the Geographic Index, the articles were easy to search (I also
had RGPL going back decades.)

I don't doubt for a moment that the texts of these articles are still
available through databases, or that the NG discs are filled with past
years' glories. But the fabulous finds in old magazines -- via ads,
letters to editors, and especially the inserted maps -- all of it just
seems to be gone.
