[CALIBK12] National Geographics

I have bound volumes of Nat Geo going back to 1925. I grieve to think that
some librarian coming after me will discard them. I send students to these
volumes as often as I can, and they come up with rare photographs of
long-gone cultures and other treasures. Same with American Heritage. .

Research and browsing in original print magazines is a great pleasure and a
source of very useful, hard-to-find information. I, too, get many
donations, which kids and teachers grab up by the armloads. I also
subscribe to the Spanish edition of NG which is very popular in my library.

Calibbers,

About the only thing I am learning from the contributions to this thread is
that there is very little real research going on in schools anymore.

Like Diane, I had a decades-old collection, which was used on a regular
basis, because it was built into the research process by teachers who loved
their subject and wanted students to discover their joy. Between RGPL and
the Geographic Index, the articles were easy to search (I also had RGPL
going back decades.)

I don't doubt for a moment that the texts of these articles are still
available through databases, or that the NG discs are filled with past
years' glories. But the fabulous finds in old magazines -- via ads, letters
to editors, and especially the inserted maps -- all of it just seems to be
gone.
