Hi,

We had Erin Dealy at our K-5 school. She was fabulous, inexpensive and
very easy to work with. Her books include "Goldilocks has chicken pox"
and "Little Bo-Peep can't get to sleep." She is a former teacher and as
such, knew just who the audience was and how to hold their attention.
Her web address is http://www.erindealey.com/ . She lives in Northern
California so there isn't a travel problem.

We have also had Matthew Gollub (The Jazz Fly, Click Clack Moon) at
least three times and he is also excellent for the K-5 school. He
incorporates multi culture with music and writing. He is available for a
reasonable fee and is located in Northern California as well. He is a
regular at the CSLA conference. His site is
http://www.matthewgollub.com/ .

Last year we loved having Jeff Savage ( http://www.jeffsavage.com/ ) who
was fabulous. He writes nonfiction about sports. We weren't sure how it
would work with our younger students but he was so entertaining I would
highly recommend him as well.

We host an author visit every year and have had a variety of
experiences, but for the most part, it has been pleasant and our
students look forward to it each year. The key is to know what your
author needs for his/her presentation ahead of time so you aren't
scrambling for an overhead five minutes before the assembly. We usually
split the assembly into three....one for the Kinders, one for the 1-3
and one for the 4 & 5s. We will provide lunch for the author in the
staff room with us. Most will want you to presell their books and will
autograph them for students after lunch. Some are willing to walk around
and visit classrooms in the afternoon. This year we are looking forward
to Jane Wattenberg.

Subject: [CALIBK12] Author Visit in Sacramento Area?

Dear Colleagues

One of our elementary library techs is interested in having an author
visit her school this spring. She doesn't have anyone particular in
mind.

Is anyone in the Sacramento (or other area close to Lake Tahoe) hosting
an author this spring that we might "piggyback" on to?

I'll confess that I've never hosted an author before (nor has the tech).
The whole thing makes me nervous. Any advice on ensuring that the event
comes off smoothly?
