[CALIBK12] library discipline

If Mary is a paraprofessional, not a credentialed LMT, then this brings
up an interesting problem we've also had in our district. Our
institutionalized practice K-8 (libraries managed by paras) is to insist
that teachers stay with their classes, not go xerox, etc. Most
principals accept and support this. We've always had a vague idea that
there was Ed. Code on this.

However, we had an elementary principal hired in from another district
who used "library time" as prep for his teachers. When I went looking
for pertinent legal citations to present to him, I couldn't find
anything except for something pertaining to Instructional Assistants not
being left alone with students - nothing specifically about other
classified staff not being left in charge. It does seem that time
without a teacher shouldn't be counted as instructional minutes, but
this didn't faze him either. He's gone now, but is there something in
Ed. Code that I missed?

Hi Mary: In my experience, it is NOT common practice to excuse the
teachers from the library while you are working with their classes. It
is the teacher's job to maintain order-not yours. The library is your
classroom, and you are there to teach the students library skills and
help them choose books and read them. It sounds like your principal has
you acting as a simple baby-sitter. Just say NO!

Help! I am at a K-6 school that has set blocks of time for each
classroom to weekly visit the library for 40 minutes. It gives the
teachers a free period which they naturally cherish. I am struggling to
maintain order with the fifth and sixth grade classes. The library is
small (classroom size) with three student computers. With 32 students,
it is difficult to help one child and still maintain order. I have
tried rewards, but at that age they would rather socialize than stay
quiet for a small prize. I have put them out of the library which is
outside, but the weather now is wet. The teachers say "send them back
to class", but when I do the teachers are seldom there and they come
back or worse wonder around campus. Writing them up and sending them to
the office seems excessive. I love this site and know someone out there
has just the answer for me. Help!
