Terrific blog and wiki, Jane.? Thank you.

I find that as a retired LMT my decisions on what to attend change.? I am also a public library trustee now, so a lot of PL stuff grabs my attention.? But, without a doubt, the Book Cart Drill Team was right there at the top and fabulous to watch.? Great T-shirt!!

BTW -- I recommend looking into becoming a PL trustee in your town.? All I had to do was say yes and it has been a great seven year ride.

I went to see Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea -- even though I had sen him a few months before when he came to HB for our HB Reads One Book event. His story is a moving one, which is why his book has been on the NYT bestseller list for over a year.? I also recommend bringing a City Reads program to your town -- you will be amazed at the response.? We had over 2400 out to events last February.? We're hoping for a repeat this year with The Kids From Nowhere.

I also saw Dan Ariely, author of Predictably Irrational make his presentation.? Lots of things to think about, especially in presenting a message so that your audience takes away what you want them to.? Intriguing stuff.

BUT --- the BEST was the Newbery Caldecott dinner.? I always have trouble biting the bullet to spend the money for the event, but every time I come away glad I did.? This time though, outdid all the rest. Brian Selznick and Laura Amy Schlitz were amazing, Brian presenting a short video of his book's character winning the award, and then the magical librarian, weaving her web of story, so that even when she tells you it's a story, you still ask, "Is that TRUE?" What a treat to meet them both and know that children get to experience them on a daily basis across the country.

After years of activity in CSLA, CLA, ALA, and now CALTAC, one just needs to stand in the exhibit hall for a while and you are surrounded by old friends.? Librarians are a delight: smart, funny, creative, warm, sharing, and generous.? 20,00 at once is always a fantastic party.

Hi CALIBBERS,

I'm just trying to catch up after a wonderful and overwhelming experience at ALA in Anaheim. Two of the biggest highlights for me were the Advocacy Institute on Friday and participating with the "California Girls" in the Book Cart Drill Team event on Sunday. I promised to try to blog the ALA conference. I didn't manage to do that while it was in progress, but I have posted a summary now on my blog at?http://janelibrary2.blogspot.com/.?I have also posted a wiki page of notes I took at the Advocacy Institute at?http://weloveschoollibraries.pbwiki.com/ALA-Advocacy-Institute. The "California Girls" are currently gathering photos and video recordings of the book cart drill team event, and we'll post more on that soon.

Happy Fourth of July and best wishes,
