Hello, Calibbers,

I want to echo what Richard and Jane said-- it was a fabulous ALA
conference. I was so proud of our CSLA "California Girls" Book Cart Drill
Team, they represented us well, and at the most hectic time of year for
school library folks. Kudos for putting on a great show, against pretty
formidible teams. If you haven't seen any of the book cart teams in action,
check them out on YouTube.

Like Richard, I attended the Caldecott/Newbery presentations (with over
1,000 other people) and was amazed and enchanted by the speeches. After
Brian Selznick spoke, amazing the audience with his artwork depicting his
character receiving the Caldecott, I wondered how Laura Amy Schlitz would
do-- he was such a tough act to follow. I'd met her earlier that day in the
exhibit hall signing books, with Robert Byrd, the illustrator. No line, and
she seemed very unassuming and quiet. She is so short she had to stand
beside the podium, and she looked like Aunt Bea on the old Mayberry RFD TV
show. and then she started speaking-- WOW! These were absolutely the best
author speeches I've ever heard.

If all you did was spend your time in the exhibit hall, the conference was
well worth attending, and the exhibit hall was huge. The booth selling comfy
insoles for shoes was doing a brisk business :-)

Hi CALIBBERS,

I'm just trying to catch up after a wonderful and overwhelming experience at
ALA in Anaheim. Two of the biggest highlights for me were the Advocacy
Institute on Friday and participating with the "California Girls" in the
Book Cart Drill Team event on Sunday. I promised to try to blog the ALA
conference. I didn't manage to do that while it was in progress, but I have
posted a summary now on my blog at http://janelibrary2.blogspot.com/. I have
also posted a wiki page of notes I took at the Advocacy Institute at
http://weloveschoollibraries.pbwiki.com/ALA-Advocacy-Institute. The
"California Girls" are currently gathering photos and video recordings of
the book cart drill team event, and we'll post more on that soon.

Happy Fourth of July and best wishes,
