Downsiders by Neal Shusterman is also action packed and set in New
York. Might be a difficult read for your 5th grader, but not age
inappropriate.

Have a fun trip!

Darla

Here are a few titles set in New York City:
>From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
Stuart Little by E.B. White
The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden
Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh
The School Story by Andrew Clements
Hey Kid, Want to Buy a Bridge? by Jon Scieszka
Rats by Paul Zindel

Hey, folks,

We frequently take a friend's little boy with us when we travel - we
have no kids of our own, so his parents generously "loan" him to us;
he's our "rent-a-kid." I'm doing my best to nurture in him a love of
reading, so past road trips have found us reading Charlotte's Web and
several of the Narnia books (The Magician's Nephew was AWESOME on the
road from Denali back to Anchorage!). Now we're looking at a pretty big
trip in a few weeks throughout New York and Michigan, and Shorty will
probably be along for the ride. He's a pretty tough kid, very
action-oriented and athletic, and a wonderful traveler.

I'm looking for suggestions on good age-appropriate novels to read on
the road trip. I thought of Tangerine by Edward Bloor as a possible
choice, but it might be a little creepy for a soon-to-be 5th grader.
Any ideas? Hmm, titles that would address fun, adventure, imagination,
maybe with a good message underneath that doesn't hit you over the head?
I will post a list to the group.

Thanks in advance,
Karen
