[CALIBK12] Query: Split library positions

A tech in a library is like a nurse in an opperating room; can't do much without the surgeon!
Get rid of the tech and spend 2 1/2 days in each place, or 3 in the high school -- for instance Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and two in the middle school, whatever your curriculum demands. I'd consider the needs of your research program first. How may additional hours could you get if you traded the tech for librarian hours? If the librarian were there, student aides could check out the books. Student aides can also be taught to shelve, and read shelve, and do lots of stuff. Techs were necessary before computers, but I have had to run my library this year without a tech for approximately 10+ weeks
Had you thought of having 2 librarians split the high schools? It might be better to stay on the same level, but then again, that also depends on the strengths and experience of your librarians. I'm thinking collection development here. This could last a while. The selection of books for the middle school can be a big deal and the circulation is way higher.

Subject: [CALIBK12] Query: Split library positions

We need your help!

Our district is looking at splitting the 4 remaining high school librarians between two schools each: one middle school and one high school. This option is in lieu of the prior plan to send us all back into the classroom part-time. Each site has at least one full-time library tech. in place.

Our question is, if you are currently split between two schools, how do you make it work? How is your time split, and what do we need to know for this to be successful? We are hoping this will only be temporary, but want to be proactive about the situation.

Any advice on how to make a split between two schools successful is needed and appreciated. I know how busy we all are this time of year...

Thank you!
