Not to be contrary, but a good library media tech is absolutely invaluable. Instead of attempting to get rid of some library staff to save other library staff, I think it is much better to save all staff. I think that can mean working outside your comfort zone, but it is amazing what teacher-librarians and library technicians can accomplish if they work together. Not just in the day job, but also in job retention.
I know that because I have a tech that handles most of the processing, I am able to teach information literacy skills more. I know that because I have a tech that does many administrative tasks, I am able to spend more time doing book talks/book selection/etc. In other words, I am able to be a librarian because I have someone available to be a library technician. If that person were not available, I would have to spend time doing many more things that do not directly impact the classroom.
I think it is important to remember that CSLA is an organization that represents both teacher-librarians and library technicians. Working together we can improve working conditions, including employment opportunities, for everyone.
