Astronomy is part of the standards-based curriculum adopted by the state California at several grade levels. While it may not mean much to you, if I still taught 3rd grade, I would most definitely have my students sign up. How exciting that would be for an 8-year-old!

As to cost, part of what we fund with NASA is public education. One way to get students interested in our current adventures in space is to do things exactly like this. If you clicked through, you saw that after you enter your name, their is a Certificate of Participation to print out. I do not know about the students at your school, but where I have taught, the students like these sorts of things. I think it is either a good introduction or a good conclusion to astronomy lessons.

The cost to the tax-payer is minimal given that it is printed on your own paper.
