I'm reposting this piece because it brings together ideas from two of the more powerful listserves in my inbox: CaLib and EdGIS.

Subject: [EdGIS] Knowledge Quest issue on Maps--The Why of Where
Folks:
Knowledge Quest, from the American Association of School Librarians, has published an issue (March-April 2008) entitled “Maps—The Why of Where”. The digital version is on:
http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslpubsandjournals/kqweb/kqarchives/volume36/364/364main.cfm
Scroll down to see the columns and features, many of which focus on learning with maps, geography, and GIS.
Here are the American Association of School Librarians standards:
http://www.acrl.org/ala/aasl/aaslproftools/learningstandards/standards.cfm
Note the references to critical thinking skills, which is what in part drove the publication of this issue.
