Knowledge Quest, from the American Association of  School Librarians, has published an issue (March-April 2008) entitled “Maps—The Why of Where”.  The digital version is on:

Scroll down to see the columns and features, many of which focus on learning with maps, geography, and GIS.

Note the references to critical thinking skills, which is what in part drove the publication of this issue.
