The district could consider this to be "works made for hire" - in other
words part of their job. They should consult with the district about
what is the policy and get it in writing that they own the copyright if
they need to.
By the way, I presume the music is all original. If it is a copyrighted
tune, it should not go outside the school at most.

Subject: [CALIBK12] intellectual property?
Several teachers at my school have been involved in making a series of
really incredible music videos related to mathematical concepts.
Basically, one of our teachers has written a series of rap and R&B
songs, recorded them in his relative's studio, and then he and another
teacher and their students are making videos. The plan is to create an
entire CD and DVD and then make it available to students at our school,
teachers, maybe later people all over the district, state, wherever.
This project is in its infancy, and they (and I) have some questions
about how to proceed.
Because they are district and state employees, could the district or
state at some point swoop in and claim these videos as district/state
property? They are made on campus (outside of school hours) and on
school computers. THe camera used was purchased through a grant. I know
that universities sometimes claim student product as university
property. Does the same apply to us?
Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
