The POWER OF CALIB!!!  

Within 5 minutes I received what I think is my answer:  The Mermaid Chair by Susan Monk Kidd (whose Secret Life of Bees is pretty Oprah-list-esque).

One of the respondants even told me not to tell her to waste her time, as it was not worth the read.  Good I asked as I had it on my own bookshelf at home.  I'd started it in the summer, but got caught on some other books.  (I may revisit the book, but appreciate the appraisal).
