That said, we do have the responsibility assigned to us by the courts as in
loco parentis.
this means we are the caretakers of the children and teens while in our
custody and not only teach them how to be safe but teach them many social
and ethical values as a part of growing up in a community. Historically,
many kids had three organizations that parented them: the home, the church,
and the school. Many kids now only have the school putting the onus on us to
"parent" these kids even more. The new AASL learning standards ask us to
teach kids responsibilities, ethical attitudes in information and
technological work spaces, self-reflection and a vari of other personal
skills to be able to cope in the real world and give these kids the skills
they need to compete in a global society. So many schools try to do outreach
to parents for this collaborative effort. Many times we succeed. Other times
we fail. In all cases, kids need advocates and adults who encourage them,
support them, and work with them. I know one CA librarian, and I am sure
there are many, who "adopted" one young lady who is now in college because
of her.. Of course there are very strict rules in all this. It is just that
fuzzy area where caring makes a difference. I can't help but remember the
film and the book: Freedom Writers that happened right in our own back yard.
It is a great challenge that we all face as we touch lives in our own unique
way as teacher librarians.
