In this time of short funding, it is good to look back at some of the advice
we have received in the past.
Five years ago Kevin Starr gave a speech to CALTAC about what we can do when
it seems there is nothing we can do. He is talking about public libraries, but
much of what he says is good for school librarians to hear as well. He
concentrated on the local -- on both participation and advocacy, so that when the
economy turned around the participants would be able to show that state funds
were needed to continue and expand. His defense of the library and his
suggestions for activity are true today.
