Calibbers may be interested in the message re: teen advocacy for their libraries......see below. Hopefully some of our great Calif. kids can participate and speak for their school libraries....(especially those who conveniently live in So. Calif.)

Subject: [calix] Request for Teens at ALA Annual 08
Hi, All
Teen advocates are needed for Fostering Youth Advocacy: How Libraries Can Help panel at ALA 2008 in Anaheim. Please read the email below and email me patricia at ylpl.lib.ca.us or Christy Mulligan clmulligan at hclib.org with any questions. [Note: Not limited to public libraries - teens in school libraries would also be welcome]
Thank you!
Patricia Rivera,
YALSA Youth Participation Coordinator
My name is Christy Mulligan and I am the chair of the YALSA Legislation Committee. I am writing because we are planning a program for 2008 Annual in Anaheim and it's looking like our current panel members may have some difficulty bringing teens to speak at our program, something that our committee feels is very important. I am interested in working with you to find local teens in that could participate in our panel, if possible.
Our program, which is co-sponsored by the ALSC and AASL Legislation committees, is focused on youth advocacy at the grassroots level. Here is the program title and description:
Fostering Youth Advocacy: How Libraries Can Help
What does successful youth advocacy look like? How can you encourage and enable teens in your community to advocate for the programs and services that matter to them? This program will consist of a panel of youth services representatives at the state and local level who will share programs and practical information on how libraries can help young people engage with funders, decision-makers and peers and let their voice be heard.
Our current panel members include representatives from the San Francisco Youth Commission - they will be speaking about the practical side of facilitating youth advocacy efforts; representatives from the Tuscon Pima County Library will be there to talk about their Teen Advocates program; a rep from the ALA office will provide tips for getting youth involved in political advocacy, and we would like to have two other teen panel members.
This is where I'm hoping that you can come in - we have tried unsuccessfully to have our current panel members bring teens; we have also tried to find out if there is a library in the Anaheim area has offered a program or participated in a city/county advocacy effort (speaking to elected officials, a library board on behalf of an issue, a teen friends group, anything of that sort) that would help round out our panel and bring youth participation to our program. Would you be able to assist us in locating youth for this panel? Ideally, if they are representing a program in the Anaheim area, we would invite a professional/librarian to accompany them and help share info about the program.
I should also add that we are not limited to public libraries - teens in school libraries would also be welcome as this is a program jointly sponsored by the ALA youth divisions. Also, if libraries work with a youth group sponsored by an organization other than a library, we would be open to that, too.
Please let me know if you think this is something you would be able to assist us with. Thank you so much in advance.
Best regards,
Christy Mulligan
