Pay attention to the articles that are being printed in your local
newspapers.
In OC, for instance, they will run an article and list districts that
are making cutbacks. Several of the district list 0 cuts, in spite of the
"budget crisis." We need to pay attention to these places and how they run their
schools.
Garden Grove, for instance, has LMTs in grades 7-12. None of them are
on the cut list, because GGUSD doesn't have a cut list. Zero. This is a
district I've bragged about before, where there is no deferred maintenance --
they fix stuff when it needs repair, there are fewer administrators, there is
little spent on teacher professional activities outside the district, and they
get national awards (the Broad).
When we are put on the defensive and we defend, we do the district's
work for them. They need to be put on the defensive. What is it about the
districts that are doing the cutting that makes life so much harder than in
districts where things just seem to run better? Ask some hard questions. Be
specific. Make them explain their lack of preparation.
