Three places for historical fiction would be:
State school library book lists at:
http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/lb/litlinks.asp.
The Fresno Public Library has put together some excellent lists as well:
http://fresnolibrary.org/teen/bn/fiction.html.
And then, a Teaching American History grant had teachers at 5th grade create
literature lists as part of fifth grade history standards, which were made
into pathfinders, which can be found at:
http://tah.cusd.com/tah/default.htm.
I would concur that Sign of the Beaver is a great one in addition to others.

Subject: [CALIBK12] TARGET: historical fiction for 5th grade boy
Hi-
I just got the following request from my fifth grade teacher. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
"I am looking books that might have to do with the time period
- colonial days/settlers and Native American relations. It can be fiction,
non-fiction, or it could be historical fiction. Are there any biographies of
people from the time? Or?? Any suggestions would be great!"
