Hi all,
Recently Peter Doering passed on an invitation for us to submit an application to present at an ELL conference next February and he included some comments about advocacy of school libraries with groups outside our own. I wanted to support his idea that presenting to outside groups is an effective way of spreading the word about what a school library should offer students and teachers.
For two years I was asked by a retired administrator who teaches at Chapman in the credentialing program to present to her small classes on the topic of using picture books for older readers (with curriculum connections). I did the presentations in our middle school library and (of course) included some information on the role of the teacher librarian and the state of school libraries in California. I did a similar presentation last night for a teacher credentialing class at a different small local private university ... this time I was asked to present on using picture books for connecting with curriculum and for modeling positive character traits. An easy fun topic ... and again, I was able to incorporate information about school libraries and staffing. The response was positive and that professor intends to ask me to present again. These requests came from people I've met through professional work and through involvement with my local reading council ... a good way to begin to let teachers in training know about library work. And this is also a plug for joining your local council of California Reading Association. Sometimes communicating in person at a real "live" meeting is needed in addition to all the "wikkiing" and "blogging"!

Hello Everyone,
I have a wonderful opportunity for a Teacher Librarian to present at the 7th Annual Academic Success Conference. This conference brings in over 300 ELL teachers for an all day conference. The event will be held March 7, 2009 at the Santa Clara County Office of Education. I believe the best library advocacy we can do is to work with other groups outside of libraries. I presented at the conference this year and the planning committee wants to include another tie to libraries. So if you have a wonderful topic or you do a lot of collaboration with ELL teachers – we would love to have you. Please send me your topic with a short explanation and I will present it to the planning committee. Please read below for more details.
Thank you
Peter
