I also like the Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins. (Gregor the Overlander, Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane, Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods , etc.....) It has a human main character that get sucked into the underland trying to save his baby sister and ends up finding his father that has been missing. He encounters many different animals/insects on his quest to get home.

As moderator of the CALIBK12 listserv I need to step in here. I know this is important, but when it gets emotional and verges on personal it must stop. I believe all the issues have been raised. It is up to us to decide based on Debbie's valuable input.
I know Ben Mikaelsen personally and will contact him to see if he has any comments.

Kathy,
You're an award winning librarian. A leader. A person with great influence.
Have you considered working with teachers and students on an article about this particular book, how teachers present it, how teachers present information about its misrepresentation//bias/errors of Tlingit people, how students respond to that information? You've told us they love it, but an article with teacher and student voices would be outstanding.
I'm going to make a big assumption here, that the teachers provide students with accurate information about the Tlingit people, so that they don't take the fiction as factual. And as their librarian, I'm making another big assumption that you provide them with the resources to counter the incorrect information. I'd like to compare sources. What do you suggest?

Our teachers injected your concerns into the discussion. Our students still decided it was the best FICTION book ever. Most of their comments were, It is a fiction book, not non fiction. We understand what fiction is.

Dear Colleagues,
I'm getting public and private emails that defend and reject TOUCHING SPIRIT BEAR.
I know it is highly regarded and recommended because boys we call reluctant readers stick with it and we (as educators) want to see students reading.
I want to push a bit, though. If the people misrepresented/stereotyped/animalized in the book was someone else, let's say... African Americans, or, Jews.... would you still recommend the book, just so that reluctant reader would read?
(Note: I receive mail from the listserv in digest format, so won't be able to read your response unless you include my email in the reply address: debreese at uiuc.edu.)

Thank you all for sending me book recommendations. It is clear this is
a subject near and dear to many of you. I now have a lengthy list and
will start reading those that I haven't already read.
I should have asked how you've used these books to support the
curriculum.
A BIG THANKS.

One of my PE teachers is tearing through our fantasy books with animal characters. She has read the entire Redwall series, is now onto the Warrior series by Erin Hunter, and has read the Rats of Nimh. Any suggestions for where I should take her next? She is uninterested in human characters. All-animal cast only.

Kathy,
You're an award winning librarian. A leader. A person with great influence.
Have you considered working with teachers and
students on an article about this particular
book, how teachers present it, how teachers
present information about its
misrepresentation//bias/errors of Tlingit people,
how students respond to that information? You've
told us they love it, but an article with teacher
and student voices would be outstanding.
I'm going to make a big assumption here, that the
teachers provide students with accurate
information about the Tlingit people, so that
they don't take the fiction as factual. And as
their librarian, I'm making another big
assumption that you provide them with the
resources to counter the incorrect information.
I'd like to compare sources. What do you suggest?

Hello all,
One of our 5th grade teachers came to me today to seek recommendations for a
list of summer reading. From what I have read here there is probably
someone out there that has a complete list at their fingertips. I would
also be interested in any single titles you may want to suggest.
I will post a list when I get it compiled.

Dear Colleagues,
I would like to encourage everyone to be mindful of when a "reply to
all" is necessary. A "reply to all" can be very useful if a dialogue is
open and many are participating, but it can also be very intimidating
and intense as well. As a recipient of a reply to all, one can feel
"called out" or attacked. If we could just take a moment to determine
the worthiness/necessity of a "reply to all" it would be helpful and in
some instances, kind.
Just my thoughts for your consideration.

Mikaelsen, Ben. Petey
>
> School Library Journal: Gr 7 Up-This ambitious book succeeds on a number of levels. It is based on a true, tragic situation in which Petey, born with cerebral palsy in 1920, is misdiagnosed as mentally retarded. Unable to care for him at home, his parents relinquish him to the care of the state, where he languishes in a mental institution for the next five decades. Step by institutional step, readers see how this tragedy could happen. More importantly, readers feel Petey's pain, boredom, hope, fear, and occasional joy. A handful of people grow to know and love him over the course of his long and mostly difficult life, but few are able to effect much change. In 1977, statewide reorganization and a new, correct diagnosis result in Petey being moved to a local nursing home. There, the final, triumphant chapters of his life are entwined with an eighth-grade student named Trevor, who finds his own life transformed by love and caring in ways he never could have imagined. Mikaels!
en successfully conveys Petey's strangled attempts to communicate. He captures the slow passage of time, the historical landscape encompassed. He brings emotions to the surface and tears to readers' eyes as time and again Petey suffers the loss of friends he has grown to love. Yet, this book is much more than a tearjerker. Its messages-that all people deserve respect; that one person can make a difference; that changing times require new attitudes-transcend simplistic labels. Give this book to anyone who has ever shouted "retard" at another. Give it to any student who "has" to do community service. Give it to anyone who needs a good book to read.-Joel Shoemaker, Southeast Jr. High School, Iowa City, IA
>
> Booklist: Gr. 7-10. There are really two stories here: in the first, a little boy named Petey, born in 1905 with cerebral palsy, is misdiagnosed as an idiot, and his parents reluctantly institutionalize him. Even though he cannot make himself understood easily, he becomes attached to caregivers and another inmate. He grows up with a sharp intelligence and a desire for human things: affection, touch, the feel of the outside air. He is moved to another institution as an old man (the story leaps decades between some chapters) and loses touch with all those he cared about. In the second half, a young teen named Trevor, almost against his will, befriends Petey when he saves Petey from a snowball attack by local riffraff in Bozeman, Montana. Trevor engineers Petey's reunion with an old buddy, gets him a new wheelchair, and, in a four-hanky climax, calls him Grandpa and inspires his distant and estranged parents. Although Petey is a cross between angel and saint, and none of the !
characters is any more than two-dimensional, there's a real strength here in the depiction of the person inside a disability and the dignity that is a divine right, even for the old or feeble. (Reviewed November 1, 1998)GraceAnne A. DeCandido.
