[CALIBK12] UCLA library question but mostly--AVID

Speaking of AVID,

What kinds of/what levels of involvement have any of you CALIB people
out there had with AVID?
Have you taken any AVID training, worked specifically with AVID classes
on Info Lit skills, been on your site's AVID team?

It seems to me we have a lot to offer/incorporate into AVID--their study
skills, 'Inquiry,' note-taking, etc.--can we somehow get Info Lit into
the AVID curriculum (as tho they don't have enough in there already)?
Our site has tried to incorporate some of the AVID strategies
school-wide, for example, with varying levels of success--

Just something I've been pondering for a while...any ideas or
experiences?

As a very proud Alum, married to a fellow Bruin, I would definitely
encourage the AVID students to visit Powell Library. It is one of the
anchor building on the historical quad of the campus. Powell is one of
those old, venerable libraries with high ceiling, wood, and amber
windows. The interior has been used for many films like Major League
and Ghostbusters.

I would also recommend the Franklin Murphy Outdoor Sculpture Gardens
located between Dr. Ralph Bunche Hall and the Fine Arts Building, some
type of exhibition is always going on. There is always Schoenberg Hall
and the Library/Museum of Ethnomusicology.

The students might enjoy a walk down Janns steps to Bruin Walk where
various social and political groups set up informational booths. Just a
visit to the Bookstore in the Ackerman Student Union is an education in
college life itself.

Good Luck,

Subject: [CALIBK12] UCLA library question

If you're familiar with the UCLA campus, can you name some possible
points of interest and relevance to middle school AVID students?
There will be a few hours of unstructured time after a scheduled
event. Which libraries might be good? Are there really eleven on
campus? Any info you can post will be helpful. Thank you.
