One suggestion: the novel "Revolution is Not a Dinner Party" by Ying Chang Compestine, set beginning in 1972, and told from the point of view of a 9 year old girl growing up during the Cultural Revolution.

Subject: [CALIBK12] books with Chinese children/ youth
Hi collective brains,
I'm looking for some good choices for high-level 5th grade students whose teachers are looking for books about a Chinese child/ youth growing up, in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong or the US (maybe even another foreign country) as long as it addresses Chinese culture and heritage as well. Historical fiction is fine, but they would be even more excited to find some titles with comtemporary characters. They are looking for books about 150p long, but the teachers are not adamant about length (could be longer or shorter- just not picture books).
Laurence Yep comes to mind immediately: Dragonwings; Dragon's Gate; The Serpent's Children; Child of the Owl; The Star Fisher; Ribbons; The Cook's Family; Angelfish; Dream Soul; When the Circus Came to Town; maybe even his autobiography, The Lost Garden.
Another one that comes to mind is In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, although that might be a bit young.
Ideally, they'd like to gather about about 150 quality titles.... a tall order, so I'd appreciate anyone and everyone's help coming up with additional titles that meet the bill.
Thanks,
Beth
