Sent to the LATimes:

Dear Editor,

Susannah Rosenblatt, your reporter, needs to go back and take another look at Orange County schools. (Laguna Beach's Lucky Schools Escape State's Funding Crunch, April 28, 2008)

Basic aid is not the only factor in quality schools.

While Capistrano and Santa Ana are threatening teachers with 1000 layoffs, their nearly identical sister district, Garden Grove (nearly the same population, demographic variety and dollars per student) isn't laying off a single one.

And unlike Capistrano and Santa Ana, and basic aid districts Laguna and Newport, Garden Grove still has librarians in all of its 7-12 schools. Music programs, art programs and counselors still operate in Garden Grove. Garden Grove also has fewer administrators.

What makes Garden Grove different? What makes Garden Grove and Long Beach districts the perennial choices for national awards for excellence (The Broad Awards)?

An article in answer to those questions would be worthy of the Los Angeles Times reporters of the past, who did thorough research before putting up slim articles with little useful information.
