We, too, passed a parcel tax measure which will continue to support our library program (and, we hope, add one more TL). We, too, needed 2/3 and got 74%. We are relieved and grateful.

Congratulations, Merced! Davis also passed a Measure (ours was a parcel tax) which will provide funding for librarians, music teachers, and other positions. It is good for three years, so we are all heaving a huge sigh of relief today. The measure required 2/3 and we got 75%! Despite some of its eccentricities (toad tunnels, anto-snoring ordinances, etc.), Davis is a wonderful town that supports its schools. We are feeling very blessed right now.

Last night our district managed to pass Measure H which will build a new high school in Merced and will expand our campus. Part of the plan for LHS is doubling the size of the library with seating for two classes, 2 full size computer labs (the current ones are crammed into small rooms), and a real textbook room. The library expansion is several years down the road but it will be great for our school. The bond passed with 62%. A similar bond for the same project failed a year and a half ago with about 54% support. I am stunned. I really didn't think it had a chance.

"Strong school libraries increase student achievement." - California School Library Association
"Research from eleven states and over 4,000 schools documents that credentialed LMTs raise achievement scores anywhere from 8-20%. Support personnel alone in an LMC do not raise achievement but credentialed LMTs do. Why? Because the LMT concentrates on teaching and learning rather than on managing a warehouse. When there is no LMT, achievement suffers - its people rather than just things that make the difference." -Loertscher, David V. with Ross J. Todd.
