[CALIBK12] Survey and copyright date

Our circulation software in SDUSD doesn't have a quick way to show collection average. We have a back door kind of way to do it, but sometimes you just have to do what you just have to do.

So, we will do the survey together. I meet with the library staff in each school for Horizon training (our circ system) 3X a year. Next training, we will teach everyone how to get the information from our system, export it into excel and do an average. We will also go step by step to answer all the other questions.

Many of our schools had fruit basket turnover of administration and staffing this year. By working on the survey together we will be able to help our folks "get 'er done," so to speak. Each school will have a folder with a blank survey in it to practice and refer to. After they go back to their schools, they will print a completed survey and place it in the folder. The folder will then stay at the circulation desk at each school. Next year, after the fruit has stopped rolling, anyone will be able to refer to last year's survey. I am also suggesting that they place any copies of information that would be helpful in that same folder.

As an aside, we are now doing Weeds of the Month in our district- a fabulous thing for those of you with union catalogs. In the next few months, the focus will be 973- less sad books to average.

Oh! And of course, there will be chocolate.

Subject: [CALIBK12] Survey and copyright date

By now, many of you have discovered the survey shift to the 973s as the check point for an average copyright date. The reason for the shift was to use a section that has a strong relationship with California content standards. The 973s do that at all grade levels. Unfortunately, 973 is often a large section, particularly in high schools. In the spirit of collaboration, I'd like to start a listserv discussion about techniques and strategies to get to the average copyright date as easily as possible. For example, how do you use the various automation systems to get to it? (Don't assume that others using your system know this.) How do you use students on this project? Has anyone tried a collaboration with a mathematics teacher for this to be an extra credit assignment? All ideas welcome. It's a group think! Thanks in advance, Barbara

Pssst--the magic word to get into your survey remains the same as last year and is the same for everyone so please share with others in your district. Type it exactly as it appears in the line below:
