[CALIBK12] Survey and copyright date

Hi, Barbara et al.
I filled in the survey last week and ran into some of the issues you
mentioned when I got to the 973 question. Follett does have a nice "age of
collection" report but it only works well with the Dewey numbers and the
reference collection as a whole. I was able to get a figure for my
circulating collection very easily.
The reference collection was another matter entirely.
I approached it by doing a call number search on "REF 973" and then manually
adding up the dates on my handy, dandy calculator (funny because my regular
calculator had disappeared so I had to grab one we provide for student use).
We have almost 200 separate volumes in the reference collection so it was a
bit tedious but eventually I totaled all the dates and divided by the number
of items. In order to have an over-all average for both collections I added
the multiple of the average date of the circulating collection by the number
of items to the total I arrived at for the dates of the reference collection
and divided that by the total number of items (both reference and
circulating) to get the over-all average date.
It was a little tedious, as I said, but the whole thing probably took about
a half-hour all together.
If this isn't too confusing I hope it helps someone else with the task.
The main problem is, as Barbara mentions, the much larger number of items in
the reference collection for 973 than there are in the 629 or whatever else
we have done in the past. The method works just as well no matter which
section we are assessing.

Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day,
something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else
would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to be always part of
unanimity.
