[CALIBK12] "This Land is Your Land . . ."

This week's Mini Page (a free newspaper supplement for children in many
local newspapers) features our national park system this issue. There are
photos and short blurbs of Death Valley, Dry Tortugas, Tallgrass Prairie,
Arches, Rocky Mountain, Assateague Island, Channel Islands, Yellowstone,
Little River Canyon, Grand Canyon, Mississippi River, Glacier Bay, Saguaro
Virgin Islands, and Hawai'i Volcanoes parks/areas.

This past week with my third graders I used the Mini Page from several weeks
ago featuring Daniel Webster. We talked about dictionaries (using a chart to
review the parts of a dictionary) and about other sources of information.
Interestingly, I asked all five of my third grade classes "How many of you
have a newspaper delivered to your home every morning? Every weekend or buy
it on Sunday?" I was very surprised that in 3 out of the 5 classes, at
least half to 2/3 of the class raised their hands for the first question! We
are a Title I school, with a predominately Asian and Hispanic population. Of
course it's possible that some raised their hand automatically, or because
they wanted to, but even discounting for that, I would average it out to at
least 1/3 to ½ of the class receiving newspapers at home daily. Most of
these families are economically challenged, yet they get a newspaper daily.
Of course, it may be a paper reflecting their parents' first language or
culture, rather than the Times or our local Register, but I am thinking that
perhaps in families that don't have computer access to news, there is a
higher demand for the print version, or perhaps if it's a culture-related
paper, it isn't available online.

"Just some random thoughts from a sometimes random mind . . ." – I'd be
interested in your input if you'd like to share it – send it to
