[CALIBK12] Subs in the library

My rule is that I don't accept substitutes bringing classes in. Unfortunately, most subs don't watch the classes and you end up babysitting. I make a couple exceptions: there's a couple subs who are excellent and work well with the classes. They are welcome. Also if the class has already been in the library and are in the middle of a research project, I'll let them come in. This is all prearranged with the teacher before she/he is absent.
I do address the class when they arrive and remind them that I usually don't take classes with substitutes and that I'm making an exception, so they must be working and on their best behavior. I quickly go over library rules (no food, electronic devices such as phones.) I tell them that I'm relying on them to be working and if they are not, I will send the entire class back.
Having said all this, I probably only allow a couple classes with subs per month.

I am in a high school library that serves about 1,900 students. When a teacher informed me today that his classes would be coming in to the library with a substitute later this week, I politely explained to him that I don't allow classes in the library with a sub. Past experiences with subs in the library have been less than pleasant, so I prefer to avoid the situation completely. Subs tend to sit and read the newspaper or a magazine, and the students turn wild. With 40 students in every class, and a 3,000 square-foot facility, I simply can not supervise and teach at the same time. What is your policy or philosophy regarding classes in the library under the supervision of a substitute teacher?
