Each of us has our favorite fiction elements; for some it is plot, for some
it is voice. My weakness is setting. For me, it is all about "location,
location, location". So I had a very enjoyable time reading The Underneath by
Kathi Appelt for my Mock Newbery book group. In my mind's eye I could see each
of the birds and trees mentioned in The Underneath that make the book such a
rich experience. But I thought about the reader who did not have the knowledge
to visualize all of the things in the bayou setting.

I knew it would add immensely to the enjoyment of the book if the reader
could envision the lovely things Appelt is writing about. So, I went on a
search for pictures. What fun I had looking up just the right images for each line
of text. Indeed (as usual, lol) I got carried away and created this Word
document. It has Google Images of all the flora and fauna mentioned in the book
(over 280 images representing over 62 lines of text from the book- for each
one I repeat the line of text for reference). A small example is embedded here
so you can see what it's like. So, if you would like a copy of the The
Underneath images Word file, please email me OFF LIST and I will send it to you. I
am eager to share.

I hope you can use this to enhance your reading and find an opportunity to
share it with your children and students. Enjoy!
