[CALIBK12] Audio Books Justification?

Doug,
I just want to commiserate. I dropped out of my adult book club within the
last few months. A woman whom I had always considered a friend was very
derogatory about my ³in-taking² books via cd on my way to work rather than
reading them in print. Actually, it makes the 35 minute drive (70 minutes
per day round trip) so much more pleasant. A really good oral reader adds
another dimension to the story, such as The Book Thief. It was an awesome
read...or should I say and awesome ³in-take.² An individual can appreciate
the beauty of the author¹s language so much when hearing the story. I do
believe that a student should also have a print copy of the book in hand so
that they can make references to theme, character, plot, setting, and to use
to quote the author¹s actual words to validate their point of view in a book
report. I taught my daughter to write essays by writing to the topic on
hand rather than wandering and trying to cover too much. Kelly got her B.A.
from UCLA and her Masters in Social Work from USC, so I think that I taught
her well.
The cd¹s on tape also allow me to become aware of many excellent books that
my students might want to read. Thus, I can recommend more titles and speak
from experience.
