I have a question. Do the Playaways have a speed control ability?
My son, who is dyslexic, learned to read well, finally, when he was in his early 20's. He has a tape recorder with a speed control function from the ...... Books for the Blind and Dyslexic (full name escapes me) He gets books on tape thru them. He started out reading 5th grade level books, very slowly. He read and read and read.... and his comprehension improved, along with his speed and vocabulary. He now enjoys reading anything he wants.

I do believe that a student should also have a print copy of the book in hand so that they can make references to theme, character, plot, setting, and to use to quote the author’s actual words to validate their point of view in a book report.

I think Pam is exactly right here. When we check out a Playaway, we include the book and encourage the student to read along. That being said, I fully understand that some of the books that get checked out are done so specifically because that student currently does not have the ability to read at that level.

And that's okay. That's why I provide yet one more reading support like Playaways. So that, in my case, middle school readers can sometimes have access to middle school books.
