[CALIBK12] databases for middle school

I have been quite pleased with the online encyclopedias offered by Marshall Cavendish. I ordered four last year and will order at least one more this year. The cost is quite reasonable when you purchase the print version. Depending on where you live, it is absolutely a good idea to have Kathy O'Kane and Sandi Rowe come out to your library.
As it happens, just yesterday I had Joan Boucher come out from Gale. While Gale certainly has online databases, they also have electronic books. The nice thing for me and maybe for you is that, if you already own the print version of the reference book, the electronic version is much, much cheaper. The advantage: Instead of having a book that one student can access at a time, you have a book that 30 (or 50 or 100 or 1000) students can access at one time. The other advantage to electronic books is that you own them (unlike online databases and encyclopedias).

I would like to know this as well, since our pres-6th is expanding to middle school. I would also like to know any problems or opinions about linking the school to the local public libraries databases via web site link. Each student would have to have a PL card of course.

I work in a middle school library. Our library has not purchased any online databases. If you are in a middle school library and subscribe to databases, please tell me which you would or wouldn't recommend and why. Has the use justified the cost?
