[CALIBK12] Surplus Textbooks

For the first time, Napa Valley USD  had a community day to dispose of
our surplus math textbooks.  What started off as an 'just another job'
became a meaningful  experience for all of us.... ! We quickly realized
that we were doing something that would help very needy children in some
very troubled parts of the world.   

   

The majority of these books will go to Liberia.  There is little if any
educational infrastructure in this country post civil war.
International Christian Ministries has raised money to ship books to a
country that barely has electricity or school buildings.  So far, the
biggest expense has been purchasing generators to light the
pre-fabricated school buildings (which look very similar to our
warehouses).  Their mission is to provide each student with paper, a
backpack, a pencil and a few books.

 

In the past few years, receiving an education in Zimbabwe has become
problematic. The country's ravaged economy has resulted  in the loss of
qualified teachers and closing of schools.  Global Ministries (in Napa )
runs schools and orphanages in Zimbabwe  and Mexico.   They were
delighted to find  math materials to train Zimbabwean teachers along
with complete sets of  math textbooks! 

 

Primary math materials are being sent to Mexico to an orphanage outside
of Tijuana and one further south. The emphasis here was on K -2
materials....especially teacher resource and student workbooks!  

  

PS We donated over 42 pallets of books!
