[CALIBK12] GEN: Reading and developing language skills in children

As treatment for my expensive audiobook habit I have been downloading free podcasts from iTunes (digital methadone).  One of my favorites is "This American Life" from NPR.  The show from 9/26/08 is called "Going Big."  The first segment is about Jeffery Canada of the Harlem Children's Zone.  His organization is attacking poverty by creating support programs for kids from birth through college.  One of the fundamentals of these programs is getting parents to read to their infants.  Of course librarians have known this secret forever but it's an amazing story anyway.  Mr. Canada just may be building a generation of library supporters.
