[CALIBK12] QUERY - Elem - organization of fiction areas

We decided to separate the books into "E" easy fiction and non-fiction for K-1 readers and "EF" for the 2-3 kids. It makes it easier for the K-1 kiddies to find books they can read.

Dear Nancy,

This comes up as an issue every year. It is such a temptation to start putting books into special categories. I think that the idea is that they will be easier to find, but what really happens is that the occasional user can't find anything. I do think that picture books can be separated from chapter books so that Kindergarten through second grade can find books that will be read aloud to them.

I believe that the more you departmentalize books, the harder they are to find. You will see both in different libraries, and you will get both opinions. Same thing with series by different authors, you will see them separated by author or topic, and you will see them all catalogued together. That one may be personal preference. I know I went back and forth on this with the Magic School Bus books. It just seemed that it would be so much easier to put them all in the same place, but then I finally relented and placed them by topic because I knew they would draw kids to those non-fiction sections.

Good luck with your decisions!

I am interested in your views about how to subdivide the fiction
sections of an elementary library. Do you subdivide picture books, I-
Can-Read, and Fiction (chapter books)? What about subdividing
series books from the rest of fiction? I know there are various schools
of thought on so many sections and am interested in your thinking on
that.
Thanks, everyone!
