I don't think it will help the student with the problem, but to avoid
future problems go to

aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466 MS Office 2007 Compatibility Pack.  If you can
download it on to your library  and classroom computers  people will be
able to open 2007 documents with 2003.  It only took me 6 months to get
my tech people to come and put it on my library computers for student
access.  Fortunately, the compute on my desk isn't locked down so tight
and I was able to help a few students because it was on my computer.

A student came in early this morning to try to send her file done in
Powerpoint for Office 2007 via Zamzar.com, a free online file conversion
site.  She was to send her file to her teacher's Yahoo account.  With my
great love for Microsoft for their 2007 hat trick, I was hoping to find
some way to retrieve students' files that they create in the Office 2007
format, which are otherwise un-openable on our machines running Office
2003.  (We just bought a new computer for home with Vista and had Office
2003 installed on it.)  The student just came back to tell me her
teacher couldn't retrieve the file or couldn't open it or something.  I
told her I would pose the question to my wise and wonderful colleagues
on the CALIBK12 listserv and told her to come back at lunch (1:30 p.m.)

Have any of your had experience with this service?  http://zamzar.com/
