Thanks so much to all who responded-- we found the book in World Cat after getting the correct spelling of the last name. And, with the help of a google search we were able to find his book (self-published) at HeritageSource.com. This should make the student very happy.
Many thanks to all who responded!!! You are the best.

Could it be "Grandfather's Journey", by Allen Say? (A reflection of a grandfather's memories of Japan and the U.S.)
Good luck...and if you don't mind, please share when you figure out just which book it is.
Thanks!

Oh Collective Brain--
Please impart your wisdom upon me... A student came in this morning and said that he had seen a documentary on the Japanese internment camps and that there was a book he thought it might be called Reflections by a George T. Timura (spelling is quite questionable). Any ideas on what this might be called? He's not a huge reader, so it is quite cool that he saw something and followed through with a query.
Thanks.

Our middle school students are reading Susan Beth Pfeffe¹s books ³Life as we
knew it² and ³The Dead and the gone². Can anyone suggest books at that level
with a similar theme?
Thanks
