[CALIBK12] textbook collection

We did a little of everything this year. Letters were sent home in July
billing them for texts not returned and then we held schedules during the
schedule pick up days. Because of Williams, we gave out texts but required
them come to the library to pick up their schedules. It gave me a chance to
remind them again and to speak to several parents. It made a significant
difference in the number of unreturned books. What also helped is that the
high schools and the middle schools worked together to clear students who
had moved to another campus. It was labor intensive but worth it.

Keeping their class schedules worked for us in the past, but now with the
William's Act hovering over our heads, we can't withhold textbooks for any
reason. We're toying with the idea of lunchtime detention this year. We'll
see how that goes.

Brenda,
As I understand it, my district didn't allow high school students to receive
their class schedule this year until their books and/or fines had been
cleared.
It apparently worked very well.

Dear Colleagues:
Our district is struggling with a huge number of textbooks not being
returned each year. We send notices to students and letters to parents,
call home, call students into the library asking them to return the missing
books.
With the budget crisis, this has become a real issue for us. Our district
leaders have scheduled meeting to try to find a solution for this problem.
How are other districts handling this problem? Do any of you use a
collection agency?
You may respond to me off the list serve if you desire.
Thank you for any help and suggestions you may give.
