Subject: [aaslforum] RE: ARRA funding for staffing positions

Dear Members

I realize how difficult it is to figure out how specificially we can benefit from ARRA funding. Below is very useful information regarding staffing from Melanie Anderson, Associate Director in the ALA Office of Government Relations. I hope this will help each of you as your districts work through the budget process.

>From Melanie:

ARRA funds could be used for staffing positions. The purpose of the ARRA is to create and save jobs. In fact, the funding in the State Stabilization fund is supposed to go to making up for any budget cutbacks in education before being spent on any other projects in the state. School libraries would fall under that. When President Obama has spoken about education and the stimulus package recently he usually says a version of this. “To give our children a fair shot to thrive in a global, information-age economy, we will equip thousand of schools, community colleges and universities with 21st Century classrooms, labs and libraries.” I think that shows a commitment from the US Department of Education and the White House that school libraries are important and will receive funds. Also keep in mind that EETT received an additional $650 million in the ARRA so there is a chance you could receive another grant. Unfortunately, the Special Ed funding won’t work for libraries.
