Hi all,
I just realized I should have sent this out about a year ago. Sorry for the
delay.
Original request:
I have two AVID classes coming in next week. The 8th graders are
researching colleges, and the 7th graders careers. Does anyone have
great websites for either general college information or great websites
for careers? (I'm looking for quality, not quantity.)
*********
Our entire district used www.careercruising.com for their career research
(we are also an AVID district). It is a website you would need to subscribe
to, so there may not be enough time for the classes next week, but it may be
a future purchase! Kids take interest surveys and conduct research based on
the results, and are able to create their own portfolio and resume. Seems
pretty cool!
Jobs = Occupational Outlook Handbook http://www.bls.gov/oco/
Colleges = College Board
http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/index.jsp
Colleges = College Navigator http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/
This is my favorite career research site:
http://www.bls.gov/oco/
http://www.vocbio.com/
Vocational Biographies is really a great site. We have a subscription but
perhaps you can get them to give you a trial.
We also use careercrusing.com....but again, a subscription database. Don't
know if this is helpful or not...can't see paying for them for a middle
school.
http://www.careersandcolleges.com/
And this is a free site to which we direct students.
http://www.cacareerzone.org/index.html
http://www.californiacolleges.edu/
We use these to career web sites to compliment our Eureka subscription.
The California Career Zone
http://www.cacareerzone.org/index.html
The Fed's Occupational Outlook Handbook online
http://www.bls.gov/oco/
http://mohigh.com/careers.htm
We have a database called CareerCruising that is outstanding. It has a quiz
that recommends 40 careers according to the students listed likes/dislikes.
It has a huge database of careers, salary, education, job descriptions,
interviews with a man and a woman who hold that career, etc. If your
district is paying for it like LAUSD, I highly recommend setting your
students lose on it. They can even save and update resumes and a personal
portfolio of career options.
Our 8th graders did an in-depth research project last year on careers. One
of the websites a teacher recommended was the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The url is: *www.bls.gov\oco <http://www.bls.gov%5coco/>*

I have a small collection that may help you. Look at the links at the bottom
of the page.
http://anaheimhs.org/library/college.html
Use Google Advanced Search, go to Universities and Colleges at the bottom
and then to the letter of your college. This is much faster and more
accurate than typing in the college name.
I was the AVID coordinator/teacher at my site last year. It is, perhaps, one
of the best programs in California for increasing student achievement and
providing access to four-year colleges. When I look for programs at my site
that I wish to provide additional support, it is close to the top of the
list.
There are a number of good websites, but a particular favorite is California
Career Zone. See:
http://www.cacareerzone.org/index.html
It includes information on career paths and employment opportunities in
California.
The Bureau of Labor and Statistics has a good kids' site.
http://www.bls.gov/k12/index.htm
The Occupational Outlook Handbook is available on the Dept. of Labor's
Bureau of Labor Statistics website: http://www.bls.gov/oco/
It is very thorough and up to date!
Try
http://www.shambles.net/counsellor/
Try this site: Occupational Outlook Handbook, Bureau of Labor Statistics,
http://www.bls.gov/oco/
The best free resources we use are the Occupational Outlook Handbook online
at
http://www.bls.gov/search/ooh.asp?ct=OOH
and Career Zone. The California version is at
http://www.cacareerzone.org/graphic/index.html
We've been pretty happy with the new "California Career Zone " at
http://www.cacareerzone.org/
It provides an interest profiler and other assessments, information on
careers in a wide variety of areas, and a "reality check" that asks students
to make choices about where they want to live, what kind of housing they
want, which utilities, what kind of car, how many children they'd like to
have, etc. At the end of this survey, they're presented with an annual
income they'll need in order to sustain their lifestyle. Last week a girl in
one class took the survey and discovered that if she got a "really good job
that paid, like, $8 an hour," she would only fall short of her goal by
$115,000 a year!
Don't miss the Occupational Outlook Handbook online, too, at
http://www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm
For colleges, California Colleges is a pretty good starting place at
http://www.californiacolleges.edu/, and I also recommend CSU Mentor,
http://www.csumentor.edu/.
For other college and career links, you might check out
http://www.sbhsd.k12.ca.us/sbhslib/collcareer/collegehelp.htm
I recommend the Bureau of Labor and Statistics page designed for K-12:
http://www.bls.gov/k12/
The end of every career page lists professional organizations and their
websites.
