Don't like walking? Come to Fullerton and hear author Rich Wartzman talk about his fascinating book, Obscene in the Extreme: The Burning of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath.

All are welcome! These programs are part of CLA's Spring Fling program series. Please see the CLA website for full program and registration information: <http://www.cla-net.org/events/spring-fling.php>

Historic San Francisco Chinatown Tour and Lunch ($35, including lunch and a copy of Judy Yung's San Francisco's Chinatown)
Saturday, May 2, 2009
10:00am - 2:30pm
Tour originates from San Francisco Public Library's Chinatown Branch
Registration deadline: April 25

Judy Yung, former librarian, professor emeritus, historian, and author will guide you through a tour of historic San Francisco Chinatown. The group will briefly visit the Chinatown Branch Library, then take a two hour walking tour and panoramic view of San Francisco Chinatown. Experience Chinatown in a new way, beyond the gilded façade and exotic mystery to a new understanding of this community's history and culture. Highlights of the walking tour will include historical landmarks, buildings, temples, open spaces, and hidden alleyways...beyond the tourist attractions and delving into Chinatown's cultural mecca. Following the tour, enjoy an authentic and delicious Dim Sum lunch at a local Chinatown restaurant, and network with friends and colleagues.
Presented by the Chinese American Librarians Round Table

Obscene in the Extreme: The Burning of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath - a conversation with author Rick Wartzman ($5 CLA members/library school students; $10 non-members)
Saturday, May 9, 2009
1:00pm - 3:00pm
California State University, Fullerton
Registration deadline: April 24

Did you know that Steinbeck's classic novel was banned from the Kern County Library in 1938 only to be eventually returned to the shelves thanks, in great part, to the valiant efforts of county librarian Gretchen Knief? Author Rick Wartzman will reveal the fascinating circumstances that led to the banning, plus describe how he went about researching one of the most seminal events in California public library history.
Presented by the Library History Round Table
