I highly recommend Jim Trelease's Read Aloud Handbook. Pages 293-394 are chapter by chapter notes (sources) and an extensive bibliography related to reading and literacy. Here is a link to his website:

Subject: [CALIBK12] need article or research help
Colleagues,
I need a professional article or research that I can share with my highly educated parents regarding pushing children to read "harder" books. Some of the parents in my elementary school library community feel that their children should only read books that "challenge" them. I am sure that someone has done research or written a professional article on the importance of reading just for the fun of it and sometime (gasp) even reading an easy book. Understand that my school is within a mile from Stanford University and some parents in this highly educated community feel they are helping their children. If I could show them research or a professional article to the contrary, they might respect that. (Just the Teacher Librarian with 20 experience in education, 2 credentials and a Master's Degree is not enough) I don't want to sound as if I am complaining because this is truly a very small minority of parents here and these parents are all wonderful and just want what is best for their kids. I would just like to help them to lighten up.
So if you know of something that may help, I would greatly appreciate it.
